GreenSpur Takes a Major Step Forward in Wind Power Innovation
There’s exciting progress coming out of Time To ACT plc, particularly from its GreenSpur division, which continues to make impressive strides in renewable energy technology. The company has announced the development of a preliminary 15MW wind generator design that significantly outperforms current industry benchmarks and it’s already attracting attention from key players in the global wind sector.
This early-stage design has been created at the request of both a leading generator manufacturer and a major wind turbine OEM. Despite being in the initial stages of development, the new generator is already approximately 30% lighter and 70–80% smaller than the best-in-class alternatives currently available. The team at GreenSpur believes there is still room for further optimisation, which could push performance even further.
One of the most compelling aspects of the design is its scalability. Based on GreenSpur’s unique axial flux architecture, the generator can be adapted for larger applications a significant advantage as the industry continues to move toward more powerful turbines. The technology is also free from rare earth magnets and copper coils, solving two major supply chain challenges without compromising on performance. Additionally, the design is expected to offer long-term benefits in terms of cost, maintenance and operational efficiency.
To take the next step, GreenSpur will work with the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult in Blyth to carry out a full, system-level analysis of the generator within a turbine setup. This phase, expected to take three to four months, will be critical in validating the technology’s performance and commercial readiness. It follows a successful collaboration between GreenSpur and ORE Catapult in 2022, when a prototype machine was developed and tested.
Chris Heminway, Executive Chairman of Time To ACT, commented:
“This is the highest level of interest we’ve seen from the global wind industry. We’ve always believed in the potential of this technology, and now we’re seeing strong confirmation that it can outperform some of the best designs out there. We believe GreenSpur is on the brink of a major breakthrough.”
Tony Quinn, Technology Development Director at ORE Catapult, added:
“This work with GreenSpur is a strong example of how we support UK companies in developing and de-risking innovative technologies that could play a major role in the future of offshore wind.”
With the energy transition accelerating and global demand for more efficient, sustainable technology growing, GreenSpur’s progress couldn’t come at a better time. This latest development places Time To ACT at the forefront of clean energy innovation, a position they’re clearly ready to build on.
