Spotlight on Lead Cooled Nuclear Reactors

Diffusion Alloys Managing Director Lisa Randall recently highlighted the following paper, by Vogt & Serre, published in 2021 “A Review of the Surface Modifications for Corrosion Mitigation of Steels in Lead and LBE”, which can be read and downloaded from here:

The paper concentrates on solutions for protection of austenitic and ferritic-martensitic steels from corrosion and embrittlement which are critical issues in Gen IV lead and lead-bismuth eutectic cooled reactors.

The paper highlights aluminized coatings by pack cementation provided protection up to 500°C for low oxygen concentrations and at 600°C for higher oxygen concentrations. The paper also highlights the potential for further evaluation of diffused boride coatings.
